Greek Street railway bridge replacement

Until Spring 2026

Greek Street roundabout in Edgeley, Stockport is located on a bridge that runs over the railway.

From 31 March this year [2025], until Spring 2026, Network Rail will be carrying out work to install a new railway bridge and roundabout. Timescales of the phased work are summarised below:

Network Rail have closed the railway in Stockport for 21 days to remove the old bridge and install the new one. No rail services will run to/from or through Stockport station during this period.

Major Engineering work is taking place at Stockport, and between Handforth, Bramhall and Stoke-on-Trent, closing all lines until end of service on Friday 22 August . This is to remove the old structure and install the new railway bridge. No rail services will run to/from or through Stockport station during this period.

Customers can use tickets and passes on rail replacement bus services calling at Hazel Grove, Woodsmoor, Davenport, Stockport, Heaton Chapel, Levenshulme and Manchester Piccadilly. There will be five buses per hour.

42C - Handforth Dean - Heald Green - Cheadle - Piccadilly Gardens

192 - Hazel Grove - Stockport - Levenshulme - Manchester

370 - Altrincham - Gatley - Cheadle - Cheadle Heath - Stockport

371 - Altrincham - Gatley - Cheadle - Heaton Mersey - Stockport

378 - Stockport - Bramhall - Heald Green - Cheadle Hulme

378A - Stockport - Davenport - Bramhall - Cheadle Hulme

X92 - Hazel Grove - Heaviley - Stockport - Manchester City Centre

There will be ticket acceptance in place on Metrolink services between Altrincham and Navigation Road to Manchester city centre.

Later in the year, further works will take place on the following dates: 4-6 October and 25-27 December.

We're advising customers to check before they travel by checking for planned disruption updates on the National Rail website.

Due to ongoing engineering works by Network Rail at Greek Street, there will be no train services operating between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport on Sunday, 3rd August.

While a rail replacement service will be in place, capacity on these buses will be limited.

To help Bolton Wanderers supporters travel to Stockport County on Sunday, TfGM will be providing a direct bus service from Bolton Interchange to Stockport County (Edgeley Park).

After the match, buses will return from Edgeley Park and drop supporters back at Bolton Interchange.

Tickets are avaialable to purchase on the direct bus service, ticket prices are as follows:

Under 16s: £5 return

Please note: Bee Network products will not be accepted, but concessionary passes can be used on this service.

From 31 March 2025 until Spring 2026, the Greek Street roundabout and part of the nearby roads will close for the works.

During the closure, we have identified a number of roads around the area where drivers may experience increased congestion. To see which roads are affected, view our map.

Built in 1958, the existing railway bridge has now reached the end of its life span and is in need of renewal.

Located on the West Coast Mainline, the bridge runs over a vital railway link, with over 400 passenger trains and 50 freight services passing under the bridge every day. By replacing the structure, rail services can continue to run reliably for years to come.

To minimise disruption, preliminary works to divert utilities has already took place over the 2024 Christmas period, with further works taking place over the Easter bank holiday prior to the full line closure in August 2025.

For local residents and road & bus users, Network Rail is working closely with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and Transport for Greater Manchester to make sure alternative travel options and diversionary routes are clearly planned and communicated.
